How we rate casinos
Every casino on Thecasinopick gets a score out of ten. The score is an editorial judgement, and a number on its own tells you very little, so this page sets out exactly what goes into it, how much each part counts, and what we will and will not claim to have checked.
The short version: we weight the things that protect you (the licence, how your money moves, and the tools that stop gambling getting out of hand) above the things that sell (bonus size and lobby size).
1. Licence and corporate transparency: 35%
This is weighted highest because it decides everything else. A UK Gambling Commission licence is what gives you deposit limits, GAMSTOP, age and identity checks, a free complaints route and the right to have your funds treated fairly. If the licence is wrong, nothing else on the page matters.
- We read the licensee name, licence number, licence account and status from the Commission’s own daily register download, not from the operator’s footer.
- We check the domain you land on against the domains registered to that account. This is how we found that leovegas.com is listed as Inactive while leovegas.co.uk is the licensed UK site.
- We publish every other brand on the same licence account, because a complaint or self-exclusion sits with the licensee, not the brand name.
- We name the ultimate parent company where it differs from the licensee, and we say plainly when two brands share a parent but not a licence, as 888casino and William Hill do.
2. Payments and payouts: 30%
What matters is not how you put money in but how reliably and how quickly you get it out. We look at which UK payment rails a casino supports, which of them can receive a withdrawal as well as a deposit, which methods are excluded from offers, and whether identity checks are requested at registration or held back until your first withdrawal.
Withdrawal timings are only published once a reviewer has recorded them on a real account. Until then we describe how the process works and what usually slows it down, and we do not print a number. A payout time copied from an operator’s marketing is not a measurement.
3. Safer gambling: 20%
Every licensed operator must offer deposit limits, time-outs, reality checks and self-exclusion, and must take part in GAMSTOP. The difference between operators is how easy those tools are to reach when you actually need them.
- How many steps it takes, on a phone, to set a deposit limit, a reality check and a time-out.
- Whether limits can be set during registration rather than only after the first deposit.
- Whether a limit set for casino also covers the sportsbook on the same account.
- How clearly GAMSTOP, GamCare and the National Gambling Helpline are signposted.
4. Games, terms and experience: 15%
This is where most comparison sites put all of their weight. We put the least here, not because it does not matter, but because every UK-licensed casino now works within the same rules: a £5 maximum slot stake for players aged 25 and over and £2 for 18 to 24 year olds, no autoplay, and, since 19 January 2026, bonus wagering capped at ten times.
Within this section we look at the depth of the slot and live-casino lobby, exclusive titles, how the site works on a 360-pixel phone screen, and the full terms of the welcome offer: the wagering basis, any win cap, eligible games, excluded payment methods and time limits. We work every offer through in pounds on the review page, so you can see what it is actually worth rather than what the banner says.
How the score is built
Each of the four areas is marked out of ten and the weights above produce the overall score. A casino cannot score well overall on bonus size alone: a perfect offer with a confusing licence trail would still lose more than a third of its possible marks.
Every casino on our list currently scores above nine because each passes the part that matters most without qualification: each holds an Active UK remote casino licence that has been in place since November 2014, on a register trail we can show you. The gaps between them come from payments, safer-gambling access and the shape of the welcome offer, and each review explains exactly where the points went.
How often we re-check
- Licence data: re-read from the Commission’s register download on a weekly schedule. If a licence status changes, the review changes the same day.
- Welcome offers: re-checked whenever we update a review, and the check date is printed under every list of casinos.
- Scores: reviewed whenever a licence, an offer or a payment rail changes, and at least once a quarter.
What never affects a score
We may earn commission when you open an account through a link on this site. The commission rate, the size of a marketing budget and whether an operator is a commercial partner at all play no part in the score. An operator cannot pay to be added to the list, and it cannot pay to be ranked higher on it.
Frequently asked questions
Why is licensing weighted highest?
Because the licence is what gives you every protection that matters: deposit limits, GAMSTOP, identity checks, fair treatment of your funds and a free, independent complaints route. A casino with a strong lobby and a weak licence trail is not a casino we would recommend.
Do you publish withdrawal times?
Only once a reviewer has recorded them on a real account. Until then we explain how withdrawals work at each casino and what usually slows the first one down, without printing a number we have not measured.
Why do the casinos on your list score above nine?
Each passes the most heavily weighted test, licensing and transparency, without qualification. The differences between them are in payments, safer-gambling access and the terms of the welcome offer, and each review explains where points were gained or lost.
Can an operator pay for a better score?
No. Commission and commercial relationships play no part in a score or a ranking, and no operator can pay to be added to the list.
Are ratings final?
No. Scores are reviewed whenever a licence, an offer or a payment rail changes, and at least once a quarter. The date of the last licence check is shown on every review.
